TRANSFORMATION OF FORT ROAD RECREATION GROUND

Fort Road recreation ground is to be totally transformed as part of an exciting regeneration project for Newhaven.

Funds have been secured to undertake major improvements to the park and planning and staged development will take place until 2025.

Project Summary

Work will include the redesign and retrofitting of existing buildings including Shakespeare Hall and the Cricket Pavilion.  Repurposing of Shakespeare Hall and the Cricket Pavilion will improve aesthetics and function.  This will include opening up the redundant sports hall and incorporating a café and creating a new terraced area at Shakespeare Hall.  The Cricket Pavilion will also benefit from improved accessibility and layout.    A new play area located next to Shakespeare Hall will be built for different age groups utilising the slopes and natural play features of the site.

A circular path route will feature, along with new seating and exercise/trim trail equipment. The whole site will be re-landscaped incorporating the planting of native trees and shrubs to increase biodiversity.  Access to the nature reserve will also be improved.

Getting Involved

The Park already supports many sporting activities including football, cricket, tennis, and bowls.  It is hoped that further sports and activities will be made available once the improvements have been made.   We welcome contact from local groups and individuals who may wish to set up or be involved in future sports, activities, or clubs.

So, if you fancy running a yoga or Tai Chi class, establishing a walking group, a painting and sketching class, or any other ideas you may have please get in contact.

FRIENDS OF THE PARK

Our aim is to establish a ‘Friends of Fort Road Park’ group.  Friends of parks can be involved in many ways from practical workdays, regular litter picks, fund raising and general social events.  They are also a great way to meet new people. Please contact Helen Blanche (Project Delivery Advisor), Lewes District and Eastbourne Councils Tel:  07716 959209 helen.blanche@lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk for further information on getting involved/’Friends of Fort Rd Park group’.
